Pharmacy Technicians and Assistants

Constitutional Change 2024

From 15 April to 5 May 2024, SHPA Members will vote on a proposal to amend the SHPA Constitution and permit Technician Members to nominate for and be nominated to become an Elected Pharmacy Technician Board Director.

  • A summary of the key changes and links to documents for further detail are available to SHPA members via this link >

This is a new role, complementing the expertise brought by the Board’s seven pharmacist directors, and three independent directors. The new Board would therefore have 11 Directors.

SHPA has a proud history of inclusion and leadership in the Technician space. We continue to champion clinical initiatives that harness Technician expertise to enable expanded practice scope across pharmacy. To shape and inform these strategic opportunities, and identify more, we need an elected Technician at the Board table as a voice of the profession.

We encourage members to support this change. Enabling a Technician Board Director is another step toward SHPA embracing the entire profession across its membership as a truly representative peak body for advanced pharmacy practice in Australia.

SHPA is committed to advocating for the growth of technician and pharmacy assistant roles, as part of efforts to advance Australia’s pharmacy workforce. In 2017, technicians were welcomed as voting members of SHPA and they remain crucial partners in pharmacy care.

Australian Pharmacy Technician Day 2023

Pharmacy Technicians and Assistants are integral to Australia’s hospital pharmacy and broader health care workforce. While roles and responsibilities of technicians and assistants vary from hospital-to-hospital and state-to-state, the focus is the same: delivering precise technical services as an essential part of hospital pharmacy departments focused on patient care.
