The Extension Seminar in Laboratory Tests comprises of a three-part self-paced learning package. Part 1 focuses on key electrolytes sodium, potassium and magnesium, and use of laboratory tests in clinical practice. Part 2 covers acid-base balance, urea and creatinine and liver function tests. In Part 3, the focus is on the circulatory system covering troponin, creatinine kinase, coagulation and platelet tests, haemoglobin, red cells and iron studies.  The live virtual seminar component provides attendees to cement their learnings through knowledge application in various case study sessions.

The self-paced learning package will be available from Friday 12 January 2024.  The live virtual component of this seminar will take place on Saturday 24 February 2024.  The self-paced learning package materials must be completed prior to attending the live virtual seminar.

Please note: all attendees will have 18 weeks of access to the seminar self-paced learning package and resources from your date of enrolment into this page.  Enrolment details will be sent to registered attendees when available.

Target audience
The target audience for this seminar is pharmacists from any practice setting, looking to extend or consolidate their practice of interpreting laboratory tests for clinical decision making and medication management.

 This activity has been accredited for 7.25 hours of Group-1 CPD and 5.75 hours of Group-2 CPD (for a total of 18.75 CPD credits), suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan.

The accreditation number is S2023/97.

The program addresses pharmacist competency standards, including:

  • Standard 3.1.2 Assess medication management practices and needs
  • Standard 3.2.2 Provide primary care and promote judicious use of medicines
  • Standard 3.3.1 Undertake a clinical review
  • Standard 3.3.2 Apply clinical review findings to improve health outcomes

Cancellation policy

  • Membership rate is only applicable if you are a member at the time of the seminar. Should your membership lapse, or if you resign you will be invoiced for the difference in registration.
  • Cancellations must be made in writing.
  • Cancellations received before 6 weeks prior to the event will receive a full refund. Non-members will be charged a $50 handling fee.
  • Cancellations received between 6 weeks and 1 week prior to the event will receive a 50% refund of the registration fee.
  • Cancellations received less than a week prior to the event will NOT be refunded.
  • SHPA reserve the right to cancel a seminar or make changes to the program
  • If SHPA cancels or defers the event you will receive 100% of the registration fee but SHPA bears no responsibility for any costs incurred  (such as flights, accommodation, travel or expenses) or loss of income.
  • It is recommended that participants obtain adequate insurance cover for travel and accommodation.
  • Transfer of registration – as an alternative to cancellation your registration may be transferred to another member of your organisation or another event (if the chosen seminar is a higher cost you will be subject to further charges). A request MUST be made in writing to the Federal Secretariat prior to the event.
  • If you are unable to attend SHPA policy is that handouts can not be made available as ‘stand alone’ materials

Venue/Accessibility requirements

  • For special accessibility requirements for in-person events please complete the relevant section when registering online and this information will be forwarded to third parties.
  • SHPA are in no way responsible for any connectivity issues as a result of the participants internet connection or hardware issues or other external factors impacting the internet, that are out of SHPA’s control.

Catering/Dietary requirements

  • Please complete the necessary section when registering online. SHPA will notify third parties such as caterers/suppliers of any dietary requirements.
  • Whilst every care is taken to notify venues of dietary requirements, SHPA cannot guarantee completely allergy free meals, nor be held responsible for any adverse reaction. Any registrant who has notified SHPA of a dietary requirement should make themselves known to the seminar coordinator and/or venue staff upon their arrival.
  • Some dietary requirements such as Kosher meals may incur an additional cost which is the responsibility of the delegate. SHPA will notify you in advance.


  • Recording and/or filming is not permitted by registrants. Please note this event may be recorded for the SHPA website and/or photos may be taken for use in SHPA resources and publications.
